Augmented Reality: Paris in Your Room

Updated: Jun 20, 2021

Hello!

In this post, I will write about a lately emerged technology, which will hopefully be used widely in language teaching soon: Augmented Reality (AR). What is Augmented Reality? Augmented Reality is a technology that makes real-world materials possible to be used to depict videos, images, and 3D models in a 3D environment.

Using AR, my friends Aslı, Nida and I created a worksheet together. This worksheet is about Paris, and we made it possible to see touristic places and foods in your room! Also, we used 360° videos and photos in this worksheet when it is not possible to find AR items. In the worksheet, with QR codes students have access to AR and 360° items. After they scan the QR codes and cover the items there, they will answer some questions accordingly, and at the end, we have a create-part which is about writing a blog post! This AR-based worksheet and usage of it are below if you would like to take a look at them.

To create this worksheet, we used Sketchfab as the source of AR items. Then, we upload them to Augment, on which you will see the AR items. Also, to add 360° photos we used TouristTube. And we must not forget our savior: Canva, which we always use and used in this task to create our worksheet, as well.

Finally, it was not as easy as I mentioned above. We faced some challenges. One of them is the texture problem. Some items we chose as AR items turned out to be white (colorless) items and/or low in quality. Also, as the AR technology is not common that much, many items that we were looking for were absent, hard-to-find or priced. So, we spent lots of time choosing the right items. Furthermore, some items we downloaded were not suitable for our AR website Augment. What’s more, as we need to ask some questions about what we use on our worksheet, we tried to find 360 videos and photos with descriptions so that we can ask some questions. However, even though it was challenging, we enjoyed doing this task!

Thank you for sparing your time! Your comments will make me cheerful!

Essential Note: As my phone has an old system version, I could not open the Augment app, so the video below belongs to my friend Aslı.
